The controversy erupted after the Wrestling Federation of India served a show-cause notice to the celebrated wrestler on May 9, accusing her of indiscipline and alleged violations related to anti-doping regulations. However, Vinesh strongly rejected the allegations and clarified that she had already received official approval to return to competition from January 1, 2026.

In a detailed statement shared on social media, the Olympic wrestler stated that the federation had “misunderstood the timelines” regarding her sabbatical from the sport and her eventual return to professional wrestling.

The 31-year-old athlete further confirmed that she has registered herself for the Senior Open Ranking Tournament being held in Gonda, Uttar Pradesh, marking what could become her official comeback to competitive wrestling after announcing retirement following the Paris Olympics controversy in 2024.

Vinesh Phogat Says She Is Eligible to Compete

The main point of conflict between Vinesh Phogat and the Wrestling Federation of India revolves around her eligibility status after retirement and the anti-doping compliance process.

According to the WFI notice, Vinesh allegedly failed to provide the mandatory six-month notice required before resuming participation in domestic competitions after retirement. Based on this rule, the federation stated that she would remain ineligible to compete until June 26, 2026.

However, Vinesh countered those claims by stating that the International Testing Agency had already deemed her eligible to return to official training and competition from January 1, 2026.

In her statement, she wrote that she possesses official confirmation from the ITA regarding her return eligibility and insisted that the federation’s interpretation of her leave period was incorrect.

She also clarified that she had already completed registration formalities for the Senior Open Ranking Tournament in Gonda and planned to officially return to wrestling through the event.

The development has intensified tensions between Vinesh and the federation at a time when Indian wrestling is already facing multiple administrative and political controversies.

Anti-Doping Allegations Become Major Flashpoint

Another major issue in the dispute involves allegations related to anti-doping compliance.

The WFI notice mentioned that Vinesh failed to appear for a scheduled dope test called by the International Testing Agency in Bengaluru on December 18, 2025. The federation treated the matter as a serious violation and included it among the reasons for disciplinary action.

Vinesh, however, denied any wrongdoing and stated that both the whereabouts failure from September 2024 and the missed test from December 2025 do not amount to anti-doping rule violations under the National Anti-Doping Rules 2021 or the WADA Code 2021.

She explained that she had fully cooperated with the concerned authorities and had informed officials regarding her inability to attend the scheduled test due to personal and professional commitments.

According to her clarification, she was travelling from Bengaluru to Chandigarh to attend the Haryana Assembly winter session as a Congress MLA from Julana. She also cited family responsibilities and the recent birth of her child as reasons behind logistical difficulties in updating her whereabouts.

The wrestler emphasized that she has consistently cooperated with result management authorities and intends to formally respond to the WFI notice within the stipulated 14-day period.

The dispute has now become one of the most talked-about controversies in Indian sports, especially because of Vinesh’s high-profile status and her past conflicts involving wrestling administration in India.

Retirement, Paris Olympics Controversy and Comeback Plans

Vinesh Phogat’s career took a dramatic turn during the 2024 Summer Olympics when she was disqualified ahead of the gold medal bout in the women’s 50kg category after reportedly being found 100 grams overweight during the weigh-in.

The heartbreaking disqualification shocked Indian sports fans worldwide because Vinesh had already defeated top opponents and secured a place in the final.

Soon after the incident, she announced her retirement from wrestling on August 8, 2024, emotionally stating that her courage had broken after the Olympic setback.

However, in December 2025, Vinesh surprised fans by announcing her return to the sport with the aim of competing at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and other major international events.

In her latest statement, she reiterated her determination to represent India again and said she hopes to participate in the 2026 Asian Games and future global competitions.

The wrestler also addressed allegations surrounding her participation in different weight categories during selection trials held in Patiala in 2024. She claimed that the ad-hoc committee managing the federation at that time was fully aware of the situation and had not objected to her participation.

Meanwhile, the Wrestling Federation of India issued its own official clarification after Vinesh’s public statement. The federation said she was provided complete security and support upon arriving in Gonda and that officials informed her about her ineligibility according to existing rules and procedures.

The WFI further stated that all wrestlers are treated equally and player welfare remains the organisation’s top priority.

Bigger Impact on Indian Wrestling

The dispute between Vinesh Phogat and the Wrestling Federation of India goes beyond one athlete’s eligibility. It once again brings attention to the deep tensions within Indian wrestling administration that have continued for several years.

The situation also carries political significance because Vinesh is now an elected legislator while remaining one of India’s biggest sporting icons.

Sports experts believe the outcome of this controversy could influence future rules regarding athlete retirement, anti-doping compliance, and federation governance in Indian wrestling.

For now, Vinesh remains determined to continue her comeback journey, while the federation appears firm on enforcing its disciplinary framework.

As the 14-day response deadline approaches, the Indian wrestling community is closely watching whether the matter will escalate further or eventually lead to reconciliation before major international tournaments.
