  • Victim’s parents seek West Bengal governor’s intervention for justice.
  • Medical fraternity demands reinvestigation and stricter punishment for convict.

The parents of the victim in the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape and murder case in Kolkata have met West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose, seeking his intervention in ensuring justice. The grieving parents urged the governor to take up their case with President Droupadi Murmu and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, as they continue to demand a thorough investigation into the incident that shook the state.

According to a statement from the West Bengal Raj Bhavan Media Cell, the parents met the governor on January 30, 2025, and submitted a representation detailing their grievances and their plea for justice. The governor assured them that their concerns would be addressed and conveyed to the highest authorities, expressing solidarity with the family and stating that humanity stands with them in their grief. The statement also emphasized that justice would prevail.

The meeting comes at a time when the parents of the victim have withdrawn their plea before the Supreme Court, which sought a fresh probe into the matter. Their petition had been filed as an Intervention Application (IA) in the suo motu case registered by the apex court in August last year, shortly after the incident took place. When the matter was heard on Thursday, a Bench of Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar questioned whether the Court should continue with the case, given that a similar plea was already pending before the Calcutta High Court. Senior Advocate Karuna Nundy, representing the victim’s family, was cautioned by the Bench, which pointed out that the sole accused, Sanjoy Roy, had already been convicted. The Court advised withdrawing the plea and filing a fresh one if required. Following a brief exchange, the petition was withdrawn with the liberty to refile as per the Court’s directive.

The development comes in the wake of the January 20 verdict by a Sealdah Civil and Criminal Court, which convicted and sentenced Sanjoy Roy to life imprisonment for the brutal rape and murder of the victim. The verdict has triggered widespread outrage, particularly among the medical fraternity, who have been vocal in their demand for the death penalty for the convict. Many doctors, medical professionals, and activists have raised concerns over the nature of the investigation and are calling for a reinvestigation into the case, questioning whether all aspects were thoroughly examined.

The case has sparked a wave of protests and demands for stricter punishment, with growing voices urging authorities to take a stronger stance on crimes against women. The victim’s parents remain steadfast in their pursuit of justice, determined to ensure that their daughter’s case receives the attention it deserves. Their latest move to seek the intervention of the West Bengal governor reflects their persistent efforts to escalate the matter to the highest levels of government. While the legal battle continues, the case has reignited discussions on the need for stronger investigative procedures and harsher punishments for crimes of such nature, as public sentiment continues to grow in support of the victim and her family.
