US Vice President Kamala Harris’s presidential campaign has seen an unprecedented surge in fundraising, amassing $81 million within the first 24 hours following President Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the race and his endorsement of US Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic Party’s new nominee. President Joe Biden’s decision to step aside came after intense pressure from fellow Democrats, prompted by his poor performance in a recent debate against Republican rival and former President Donald Trump.
Kevin Munoz, the spokesperson for US Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign, emphasized the strong support behind US Vice President Kamala Harris. “There is a groundswell behind US Vice President Kamala Harris and Donald Trump is terrified because he knows his divisive and unpopular agenda can’t stand up to the vice president’s record and vision for the American people,” Munoz stated.
The substantial fundraising haul includes contributions raised across the campaign, the Democratic National Committee, and joint fundraising committees. Over 888,000 grassroots donors contributed within this initial period, with 60 percent making their first donation of the 2024 election cycle. This impressive figure represents the highest 24-hour fundraising total for any candidate in history.
The campaign reported that in the last 24 hours, they added 43,000 new recurring donors, with more than half committing to weekly donations. Additionally, a fundraising call hosted by Win with Black Women brought in approximately $1.6 million in grassroots contributions alone. US Vice President Kamala Harris’s official social media account, @KamalaHQ, also saw its following double overnight.
Munoz reacted to the fundraising success by noting, “The historic outpour of support for US Vice President Kamala Harris represents exactly the kind of grassroots energy and enthusiasm that wins elections.” He added that a diverse coalition is forming to support the campaign’s efforts to connect with voters crucial for the upcoming election.
While President Joe Biden’s endorsement significantly boosts US Vice President Kamala Harris’s position as the presumptive Democratic nominee, she must still secure the nomination officially through the Democratic National Convention scheduled in Chicago from August 19-22. President Joe Biden’s campaign, which has secured 3,896 delegates, will need to transfer its support and financial resources to US Vice President Kamala Harris as she continues to build her campaign infrastructure.
In the wake of President Joe Biden’s decision, US Vice President Kamala Harris, who has served as the nation’s first female, first Black, and first South Asian vice president since 2021, received additional backing from former President Bill Clinton. This endorsement is expected to facilitate her delegate battle during the convention.
The Association of State Democratic Committees (ASDC) reported that an overwhelming majority of state Democratic Party chairs have voiced their support for US Vice President Kamala Harris as their presidential nominee, further solidifying her position within the party.
