In a bid to mitigate potential escalations in the Middle East, the Biden administration has called on Israel to enhance communication and consultation with the United States before any response to potential Iranian attacks. Senior American and Israeli officials disclosed that the request includes providing early notice to Washington before taking any military action.
The move comes in the wake of concerns within the US government regarding the ramifications of unilateral Israeli strikes on American personnel and bases in the region. The Biden administration seeks to avoid a larger regional conflict and aims to offer input on such matters before decisions are finalized, according to a senior American official.
Washington’s discontent with the lack of prior notification was underscored by US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin during a recent phone call with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on April 3, reported The Washington Post.
In ongoing efforts to bolster regional defenses, General Michael Erik Kurilla, the commander of the US Central Command, remains in Israel to coordinate joint defensive strategies with the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) against potential Iranian threats.
Addressing the escalating tensions, American Defense Minister Austin reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to Israel’s defense during his recent conversation with Defense Minister Gallant, stating that Israel can rely on full American support against Iranian aggression. In response, Gallant emphasized Israel’s readiness to appropriately retaliate in the event of a direct Iranian attack.
Meanwhile, Iran has sent mixed messages to the Biden administration through various Arab countries, warning of retaliatory actions against US forces in the region if Washington intervenes in conflicts between Iran and Israel. Iranian officials reportedly hold the US partially responsible for recent Israeli strikes, attributing it to Washington’s support for Tel Aviv.
While American intelligence assesses that Iran may retaliate against American bases and soldiers in the event of a joint Israeli-American attack, diplomatic channels indicate a more tempered stance from Tehran. Talks between the foreign ministers of Britain, Germany, and Australia with their Iranian counterpart highlighted Iran’s willingness to limit its response to avoid broader regional escalation.
Notably, direct communication between the US and Iran persists through official channels managed by the Swiss government, reflecting efforts to manage tensions and avoid further destabilization in the region.
