The United States has expressed its expectation for “accountability” from India regarding the alleged assassination plot against Khalistani terrorist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun on American soil. This statement was made after India dismissed claims reported by the Washington Post about the involvement of a former Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) officer, Vikram Yadav, in the planning of the assassination.
US State Department Principal Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel emphasized the ongoing cooperation between the two countries, stating that the US will continue to seek updates from the Indian inquiry committee and raise concerns at senior levels of the Indian government. The specifics of the case have been deferred to the Department of Justice for further comments.
In response, Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for India’s External Affairs Ministry, criticized the report for its “unwarranted and unsubstantiated imputations,” and highlighted that a high-level committee is still investigating the matter.
The controversy gained international attention following the November charges by US federal prosecutors against Indian national Nikhil Gupta, who allegedly collaborated with an Indian government employee in the attempted assassination of Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, who is currently residing in the US and holds dual citizenship with Canada. Gurpatwant Singh Pannun has been designated as a terrorist under India’s Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act due to his involvement in terror activities.
The allegations of this plot surfaced shortly after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, in September last year, suggested possible involvement of Indian agents in the murder of another Khalistani terrorist, Hardeep Singh Nijjar, in British Columbia. India has strongly denied these allegations.
