In a contentious parliamentary session on Tuesday, Pierre Poilievre, leader of Canada’s opposition, was expelled from the House of Commons after repeatedly referring to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as a “wacko.” The incident arose during a debate on the government’s handling of the drug overdose crisis.
The exchange escalated when PM Justin Trudeau accused Pierre Poilievre of associating with white supremacists, an allegation that allowed Justin Trudeau to remain in the session despite the tension. Pierre Poilievre retaliated by criticizing Justin Trudeau’s drug policies, questioning, “When will we put an end to this wacko policy by this wacko prime minister?” in the elected lower chamber of the House of Commons.
Speaker Greg Fergus, affiliated with the Liberal party, deemed Pierre Poilievre’s comments unparliamentary and unacceptable, asking him four times to retract his statement. Pierre Poilievre refused each request and suggested using the terms “extremist” or “radical” instead. Consequently, Fergus ordered Pierre Poilievre to leave the House for the day, citing disrespect to the speaker’s authority.
After his expulsion, Pierre Poilievre took to social media platform X to continue his critique, stating, “Trudeau’s stance on hard drug use in public is wacko. He sees no problem in allowing addicts to smoke fentanyl in BC parks, playgrounds, and hospitals. That’s wacko.” This public fallout marks a significant clash in Canadian politics over critical social issues.
