  • Covert Missile Shipment

Recent revelations have emerged regarding the United States’ covert shipment of long-range missiles to Ukraine to bolster its defense against Russian aggression. According to a US official speaking on condition of anonymity, the missiles were part of a $300 million military aid package approved by President Joe Biden on March 12, with a significant number already delivered to Ukraine and more slated for shipment.

White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan confirmed the deployment of the missiles, known as Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS), during a briefing for reporters. He emphasized Ukraine’s commitment to use the weapons exclusively within its own borders, refraining from targeting Russia.

The decision to provide Ukraine with long-range missiles was preceded by internal debates within the Biden administration, with initial Pentagon opposition citing concerns over potential depletion of US missile stockpiles and fears of Ukrainian use against Russian targets. However, Russia’s deployment of North Korean-supplied ballistic missiles against Ukraine, along with continued targeting of Ukrainian infrastructure, prompted a reassessment of US strategy.

In late January, a solution was reached to address military readiness concerns, paving the way for the administration’s approval to send the missiles. Funding challenges were circumvented in March when unexpected savings from Pentagon contracts allowed for the allocation of $300 million in assistance to Ukraine, including the covert inclusion of the ATACMS.

President Biden, in consultation with his national security team, endorsed the decision to provide the missiles, underscoring the importance of maintaining operational security and strategic surprise. The move reflects ongoing US support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity in the face of Russian aggression.

The deployment of long-range missiles to Ukraine underscores the intensification of the conflict and the escalating stakes for both sides. As the situation continues to evolve, the international community closely monitors developments and explores diplomatic avenues to de-escalate tensions and restore stability to the region.
