US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has called for an “immediate ceasefire” between Hamas and Israel, emphasizing the urgency of the situation as Hamas operatives engage in talks with Qatari and Egyptian mediators in Cairo.
During a meeting with Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani in Washington, Blinken stressed the opportunity for a ceasefire to bring about significant humanitarian relief and pave the way for a lasting resolution to the conflict.
“It is on Hamas to make decisions about whether it is prepared to engage in that ceasefire,” Blinken stated, highlighting the crucial role of the militant group in determining the path forward.
Al-Thani, a key mediator in the negotiations, reaffirmed Qatar’s commitment to facilitating peace efforts, despite challenges and attempts to undermine the process. He expressed determination to see an end to humanitarian suffering and the safe return of hostages to their families.
Meanwhile, Blinken also called on Israel to enhance humanitarian aid efforts in Gaza, where the population is grappling with dire conditions exacerbated by conflict. He emphasized the importance of maximizing aid delivery and ensuring access to essential resources for those in need.
“Israel has to maximize every possible means of getting assistance to people who need it,” Blinken asserted, urging Israel to open more crossings into Gaza and streamline the distribution of aid to affected communities.
The United States has resorted to aid airdrops in Gaza amid mounting concerns of famine and humanitarian crisis. Blinken underscored the imperative of addressing the dire situation promptly, emphasizing that the current conditions are untenable.
