Secretary of State Antony Blinken has stated that the United States possesses evidence of China’s attempts to influence the upcoming US presidential elections. Blinken made these remarks following President Joe Biden’s communication with Chinese President Xi Jinping, urging him to refrain from interfering in the US electoral process, to which Xi reportedly agreed.
During an interview with CNN at the conclusion of a three-day visit to China, Antony Blinken emphasized the US’s commitment to combatting any such interference swiftly. He disclosed that evidence of attempts to influence and potentially interfere in the elections had been observed, underscoring the urgency of halting such actions.
Antony Blinken also expressed concerns regarding China’s alleged exploitation of existing social divisions within the US for influence campaigns, despite Beijing’s repeated assertions of non-interference in US elections. He noted previous instances of political interference attributed to China, including in Canada.
Additionally, Antony Blinken defended the right to protest in the US amidst ongoing pro-Palestinian demonstrations, acknowledging instances of antisemitism but affirming that protests themselves are not inherently antisemitic. He reiterated the US’s commitment to its foreign policy interests and values, including its relationship with Israel.
Regarding China’s support for Russia amid the conflict with Ukraine, Antony Blinken voiced apprehensions and indicated potential further actions beyond existing sanctions if such support persists. He underscored the collaborative effort among nations to address China’s actions and emphasized the need for a unified response.
