The United States reiterated its backing for reforms within the United Nations, particularly concerning the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), in response to comments made by Tesla CEO Elon Musk advocating for India’s permanent seat at the UNSC.
Speaking to the media, US State Department Principal Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel affirmed the US’s endorsement of reforms to UN institutions, including the Security Council, to better reflect the realities of the 21st century. Patel referenced previous statements by President Biden and Secretary of State regarding the need for such reforms but did not provide specific details on the proposed steps.
In January, Elon Musk had criticized the absence of India as a permanent member of the UNSC, describing it as “absurd” and calling for a revision of the UN bodies to ensure adequate representation of populous nations like India and Africa.
India’s aspiration for a permanent seat at the UNSC has long been recognized, with President Biden expressing support for India’s bid during the G20 Summit in New Delhi in September 2023. A joint statement issued after bilateral talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Joe Biden reaffirmed the US’s backing for India’s candidacy for a permanent seat and its bid for a non-permanent seat in 2028-29.
Currently, the UNSC comprises five permanent members, known as the P5, namely the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Russia, and China. These members possess veto power, giving them significant influence over UNSC decisions. Non-permanent members, elected for two-year terms, lack veto power but contribute to the council’s deliberations.
As discussions surrounding UN reform continue, India’s quest for a permanent seat at the UNSC remains a focal point of international diplomacy.
