US President Joe Biden, in a recent gaffe, mistakenly urged Americans to resolve their differences at the “battle box” instead of the ballot box. The remark came during a speech addressing the recent attack on former President Donald Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania.
Speaking from the White House Oval Office on Sunday, US President Joe Biden emphasized the importance of democracy and peaceful resolution. “I’ll continue to speak out strongly for our democracy, stand up for our Constitution and the rule of law, to call for action at the ballot box. No violence in our streets. That’s how democracy should work,” US President Joe Biden stated. He continued, “We debate and disagree, we compare and contrast the character of the candidates, the records, the issues, the agenda, the vision for America.”
However, US President Joe Biden then misspoke, saying, “But in America, we resolve our differences at the battle box. Now, that’s how we do it, at the battle box, not with bullets.” The gaffe quickly gained attention, overshadowing his call for non-violence.
Earlier on Sunday, US President Joe Biden addressed the nation, condemning the attack on former President Donald Trump and urging a reduction in political rhetoric. “The attack on former President Donald Trump calls on all of us to take a step back. We can’t allow this violence to be normalized. The political rhetoric in this country has gotten very heated. It’s time to cool it down,” US President Joe Biden said, adding, “We all have a responsibility to do this.”
The incident at former President Donald Trump’s rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, saw the former president injured by gunshots. Blood was visible on former President Donald Trump’s face and ear as he reached for his neck. Multiple media reports confirmed the presence of gunfire during former President Donald Trump’s address. The Secret Service quickly escorted Trump to safety, confirming that he was unharmed.
The FBI later identified the shooter as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania. Crooks, a registered Republican, was killed by snipers at the scene. The FAA subsequently closed the airspace over Bethel Park for special security reasons.
The attack has intensified the political climate, with US President Joe Biden’s campaign previously referring to former President Donald Trump as a would-be “dictator.” US President Joe Biden has frequently described former President Donald Trump as a threat to democracy, which Republicans argue has contributed to a climate of hatred.
In the wake of the attack, US President Joe Biden reiterated the need for peaceful political discourse, stating, “We can’t allow this violence to be normalized. The political rhetoric in this country has gotten very heated. It’s time to cool it down.”
