Following the Israeli military’s bombing of a school housing displaced people in central Gaza, which resulted in 17 civilian deaths and dozens of injuries, US President Joe Biden’s recent statements claiming strong support for Palestinians have been met with widespread ridicule. The attack, verified by Al Jazeera, showcased the severity of the ongoing conflict in Gaza, where mass-casualty incidents have become a near-daily reality over the past nine months. Many in the besieged territory blame US-supplied weapons for the devastation.
Biden, in an online interview, asserted his significant contributions to the Palestinian community, including opening assets and coordinating aid. However, Palestinian rights advocates have criticized his remarks, highlighting his unconditional support for Israel, which they argue is fueling genocide in Gaza. Amer Zahr, a Palestinian American comedian and activist, labeled Biden’s comments as either arrogant, blind, or deceitful, accusing him of enabling violence while taking minimal credit for aid.
Detroit-based Palestinian American organizer Lexis Zeidan echoed this sentiment, stating that Biden has only increased the Palestinian death toll with US-funded Israeli bombs. Since the conflict intensified, the Israeli military, armed by the US, has killed over 38,000 Palestinians and caused widespread destruction in Gaza.
In the same interview, Biden reiterated his identity as a Zionist, defending Israel as a safe haven for Jews. This stance, however, has been criticized for potentially perpetuating the anti-Semitic trope of dual loyalty. Eva Borgwardt of IfNotNow, a progressive Jewish-American group, argued that Biden’s comments threaten the safety of Jewish Americans by diverting focus from combating domestic white nationalism.
Biden’s unwavering support for Israel has alienated key Democratic constituencies, including young people, progressives, and Arab and Muslim Americans. Ahmad Abuznaid, executive director of the US Campaign for Palestinian Rights, accused Biden of supporting genocide while attempting to present himself as an ally to the Palestinian movement.
Despite Biden’s claims of withholding offensive weapons from Israel, his administration continues to provide substantial military aid. This year alone, Biden approved $14 billion in additional military assistance. Critics argue that Biden could halt the violence by stopping the flow of funds and weapons to Israel, but his actions suggest steadfast support for Israeli policies in the region.
