The United States is on heightened alert and bracing for possible retaliation from Iran following Israel’s airstrike on the Iranian embassy in Syria, a senior US official revealed on Friday.
“We’re currently maintaining a state of heightened vigilance,” stated the official, confirming recent reports from CNN suggesting an imminent attack within the coming week.
Earlier this week, suspected Israeli warplanes carried out an attack on Iran’s embassy in Damascus, resulting in the death of an Iranian military commander. The strike, viewed as a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between Israel and its regional adversaries, claimed the lives of seven Iranian military advisers, including Mohammad Reza Zahedi, a high-ranking commander within the Quds Force of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
Iran has issued a statement asserting its right to deliver a “decisive response” to the attack.
US President Joe Biden addressed the escalating tensions in a recent phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, emphasizing unwavering US support for Israel’s defense against potential threats from Iran.
“Our communication channels have remained open and active since then,” a senior official from the Biden administration affirmed. “The United States stands firmly behind Israel’s efforts to safeguard its security against any Iranian aggression.”
