In a significant escalation of tensions in the Middle East, the United States military conducted airstrikes on Friday in Iraq and Syria, targeting over 85 sites linked to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) and its supported militias. The strikes were in response to the recent attack in Jordan that claimed the lives of three U.S. troops while injuring 40 others.

President Joe Biden’s administration initiated the multi-tiered response, deploying long-range B-1 bombers from the U.S. in an operation signaling a robust stance against Iran-backed militants. While the strikes did not reach Iranian territory, they marked a considerable intensification of the conflict.

The U.S. military revealed that the targets included command and control centers, rockets, missiles, drone storage facilities, as well as logistics and munition supply chain facilities. The strikes covered seven locations, with four in Syria and three in Iraq. The Quds Force, the foreign espionage and paramilitary arm of the IRGC, was a primary focus due to its influence across the Middle East.

U.S. Lieutenant General Douglas Sims, the director of the Joint Staff, reported apparent success in the attacks, triggering significant secondary explosions indicating hits on militant weaponry.

Sims acknowledged that casualties were expected, emphasizing that the strikes were carried out with that awareness. Weather conditions played a pivotal role in determining the timing of the operation.

Syrian state media decried the “American aggression” on its desert areas and the Syrian-Iraqi border, reporting casualties and injuries. Meanwhile, the Iraqi military, emphasizing the potential for regional instability, criticized the strikes as a violation of Iraqi sovereignty.

“Iraq and the region could face dire consequences,” warned Iraqi military spokesman Yahya Rasool, expressing concern about the impact on the ongoing efforts of the Iraqi government.

President Joe Biden, in a statement, reiterated the U.S. position, stating, “We do not seek conflict in the Middle East or anywhere else in the world. But to all those who seek to do us harm: We will respond.”

As the situation unfolds, the international community closely watches for further developments, anticipating the repercussions of this latest chapter in the complex and volatile landscape of the Middle East.
