US Ambassador to India, Eric Garcetti, delivered a pointed message emphasizing the depth and importance of the India-US relationship while cautioning against complacency. Speaking at a defense conclave in Delhi, Garcetti underscored that despite the current robust state of relations, it should not be presumed as guaranteed, particularly in light of recent geopolitical maneuvers involving India and Russia.
Garcetti’s remarks follow Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Russia, which occurred amidst tensions over Russia’s actions in Ukraine, leading to sanctions from Western nations. The US envoy stressed that while India values its strategic autonomy, there is no room for autonomy in times of conflict. He emphasized the necessity for both nations to act in concert, especially during crisis moments, rejecting the notion of strategic autonomy as a barrier to collaborative action.
“In an interconnected world, no conflict remains distant. We must not only advocate for peace but also take tangible steps to ensure that those who defy peaceful norms face consequences,” Garcetti asserted, highlighting the imperative for joint US-India cooperation in global stability efforts.
Garcetti’s comments also reflected US concerns over the timing of PM Modi’s Russia visit, which coincided with a NATO Summit. Reports indicated US officials’ frustration over the timing and the optics of PM Modi’s interaction with Russian President Vladimir Putin during the summit. Efforts were reportedly made by US Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell to reschedule Modi’s visit, underscoring underlying tensions amidst broader geopolitical dynamics.
The US ambassador emphasized on the mutual benefits of a strong US-India relationship, urging both sides to invest further to deepen their partnership. He cautioned against a transactional approach, advocating instead for a relationship based on trust and shared strategic interests.
