Uruguay football icon Luis Suárez has announced his retirement from international football, marking the end of a distinguished career that has seen him become Uruguay’s all-time leading scorer. Luis Suárez made the announcement during a press conference on Monday, September 2, revealing that he would retire following Uruguay’s FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Paraguay on September 6.
Luis Suárez, who debuted for the Uruguayan national team on February 8, 2007, in a 3-1 win over Colombia, has been a pivotal figure in Uruguay’s football landscape for 17 years. Throughout his international career, Luis Suárez amassed an impressive 69 goals in 142 appearances, solidifying his status as Uruguay’s most prolific scorer. His contributions were instrumental in securing Uruguay’s qualification for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, where he played a crucial role in the team’s journey to the semifinals.
In his retirement announcement, Luis Suárez reflected on his decision, stating, “There is no better pride in oneself than knowing when the right moment to retire is. I am 37 years old, and I know that it is very difficult to get to the next World Cup. It comforts me a lot that I can retire and not be forced out by injuries or a lack of call-ups.” He expressed that although the decision was challenging, he felt ready to step aside, having given his all in every game and maintaining his passion for the sport until the end.
Luis Suárez’s international career is also marked by one of the most infamous moments in World Cup history. During the 2010 World Cup quarterfinal against Ghana, Luis Suárez made a controversial handball on the goal line in the dying moments of the match to deny Ghana a certain goal. Though he was sent off for the infraction, Ghana’s Asamoah Gyan missed the subsequent penalty, and Uruguay won the match in a dramatic penalty shootout, advancing to the semifinals.
Luis Suárez’s most recent appearance for Uruguay was in the 2024 Copa América third-place match against Canada, where he scored a penalty in the shootout to help secure victory for his team. Currently playing with Lionel Messi at Inter Miami CF in Major League Soccer (MLS), Luis Suárez will now focus on his club career, leaving behind an extraordinary legacy in international football.
