Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarked on a lion safari at Gujarat’s Gir Wildlife Sanctuary on Monday, marking World Wildlife Day with a strong message on biodiversity conservation. During his visit, he highlighted India’s efforts in wildlife protection and emphasized the crucial role of every species in maintaining ecological balance.
Taking to X, Narendra Modi reiterated his commitment to wildlife preservation, urging people to recognize the significance of biodiversity. “Today, on #WorldWildlifeDay, let’s reiterate our commitment to protect and preserve the incredible biodiversity of our planet. Every species plays a vital role—let’s safeguard their future for generations to come! We also take pride in India’s contributions towards preserving and protecting wildlife,” he posted.
Narendra Modi’s visit to Gir came after his overnight stay at Sinh Sadan, a forest guest house managed by the Gujarat Forest Department. His arrival from Somnath on Sunday evening, where he offered prayers at the Lord Shiva temple—one of the 12 Jyotirlingas—was followed by a morning safari at the sanctuary. Accompanied by senior forest officials and ministers, the Prime Minister explored the natural habitat of the Asiatic lions, a species found only in Gujarat.
The Prime Minister also chaired the seventh meeting of the National Board for Wildlife (NBWL) at Sasan Gir, the headquarters of the sanctuary. The NBWL comprises 47 members, including the Chief of Army Staff, state representatives, NGO members working in wildlife conservation, chief wildlife wardens, and secretaries from various states. The meeting focused on policy discussions and strategies for wildlife conservation in India.
As part of his engagement, Narendra Modi interacted with women forest staffers in Sasan, acknowledging their contributions to wildlife conservation efforts. His visit also underscored the government’s commitment to strengthening wildlife protection measures, including the ambitious Project Lion. The central government has sanctioned over Rs 2,900 crore for this project, which aims to conserve and expand the habitat of Asiatic lions across Gujarat.
According to an official release, Asiatic lions now inhabit nearly 30,000 square kilometers across 53 talukas in nine districts of Gujarat. To enhance conservation efforts, a high-tech monitoring center for wildlife tracking and a modern hospital for animal care have been established in Sasan. Additionally, a National Referral Center for Wildlife is being developed over 20.24 hectares in Junagadh district to serve as a specialized research and rehabilitation facility.
On Sunday, before heading to Gir, Narendra Modi also visited Vantara, an animal rescue and conservation center located at the Reliance Jamnagar refinery complex. This center is dedicated to rehabilitating and providing medical care for rescued elephants and other wildlife.
Through his visit and initiatives, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi reinforced India’s commitment to safeguarding wildlife and preserving its rich biodiversity for future generations.
