In an emergency session convened by the United Nations Security Council, the majority of representatives, excluding Western nations and a few of their allies, have denounced the Israeli government for its recent airstrike on the consular section of the Iranian Embassy in Damascus. Concerns were raised regarding the potential escalation of unrest and chaos in the region as a result of this action.
During the meeting, Russia’s ambassador and representative to the UN, Vassily Nebenzia, strongly criticized the Israeli attack, emphasizing its potential to exacerbate regional conflicts. He condemned the targeting of Iran’s embassy building, emphasizing the importance of upholding diplomatic immunity as per the 1963 Vienna Convention. Nebenzia also noted previous Israeli attacks on civilians in Syria, expressing alarm over the escalation of such actions.
China’s deputy representative to the United Nations echoed these sentiments, denouncing the Israeli action as a violation of Syria’s territorial integrity. Drawing on past experiences, the Chinese representative expressed sympathy for Iran and emphasized the need to prevent such reckless moves against diplomatic missions, citing the Vienna Convention.
Algeria’s ambassador and permanent representative to the UN voiced strong opposition to the Israeli violation, condemning it as unjustifiable and intolerable. He expressed condolences for Iranian military advisors killed in the attack and criticized Israel’s disregard for international requests to cease hostilities, accusing the regime of seeking to drag the region into conflict.
The lack of condemnation from key Western nations, including the United States, Britain, and France, drew sharp criticism from other representatives. France, while refraining from directly condemning Israel, called for restraint, prompting a response from the Russian envoy questioning their stance. The United States denied involvement in the attack, with its deputy ambassador emphasizing baseless accusations against Iran instead.
The UK’s deputy ambassador expressed concern about escalating tensions in the region, while attributing blame to Iran for supporting resistance groups. The Swiss representative acknowledged the heightened tension but avoided condemning the Israeli regime directly.
While most representatives condemned Israel’s aggression, the abstention of the United States, Britain, France, Japan, and South Korea from condemning the attack on the Iranian diplomatic mission in Syria underscored divisions within the Security Council.
