United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has expressed deep concern over the increasing global trend of anti-Muslim bigotry, urging governments and online platforms to take stronger action to protect religious freedom and combat hate speech. Guterres’ remarks were made on the occasion of the International Day to Combat Islamophobia, observed annually on March 15.
The United Nations, along with various human rights organizations, has documented a significant rise in Islamophobia, anti-Arab bias, and anti-Semitism, particularly following the onset of the 17-month-long war in Gaza. Guterres highlighted the growing concern in a video post on social media platform X, condemning actions ranging from racial profiling and discriminatory policies to violent attacks targeting Muslims and places of worship.
“We are witnessing a disturbing rise in anti-Muslim bigotry, from racial profiling and discriminatory policies that violate human rights and dignity to outright violence against individuals and places of worship,” Guterres stated. He also pointed out that this rise in hatred is part of a larger, more dangerous trend of intolerance and extremist ideologies, which increasingly target vulnerable religious groups.
The UN Secretary-General emphasized the need for governments worldwide to take responsibility for fostering social cohesion and ensuring the protection of religious freedoms. He stressed that it is crucial for leaders to work towards creating inclusive societies where religious minorities are protected from discrimination and violence.
In addition to government action, Guterres also urged online platforms to take stronger measures to curb hate speech and harassment. “We must all speak out against bigotry, xenophobia, and discrimination,” he added. He called on everyone, not just governments, to actively oppose hate in all forms and stand in solidarity with those who face religious discrimination.
The rise in anti-Muslim sentiment is a pressing global issue, and Guterres’ call for action highlights the urgency of addressing it. On this International Day to Combat Islamophobia, the UN is advocating for a collective global effort to uphold human rights, equality, and dignity for all people, regardless of their religious beliefs.
