The United Nations General Assembly has made a strong appeal for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip while expressing unwavering support for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA). This move comes amidst escalating violence that has left Gaza devastated and its population facing an unprecedented humanitarian crisis.
In a decisive vote held on Wednesday, the General Assembly adopted a resolution demanding an immediate, unconditional, and permanent ceasefire in Gaza. The resolution was overwhelmingly supported, with 158 out of 193 member states voting in favor, nine voting against, and 13 abstaining. This marked a significant moment in the international community’s attempt to address the ongoing conflict.
A second resolution was also passed, garnering 159 votes in favor, nine against, and 11 abstentions. This resolution expressed strong support for UNRWA and condemned a recent Israeli law aiming to prohibit the agency’s operations within Israel. The resolution called on Israel to respect UNRWA’s mandate, abide by its international obligations, and ensure the unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid throughout the Gaza Strip. It further emphasized Israel’s responsibility to facilitate full, rapid, and safe access for humanitarian assistance in all forms.
The votes followed two days of impassioned speeches by diplomats, with many urging an end to Israel’s 14-month military campaign in Gaza. According to reports, the conflict has resulted in over 44,805 deaths, predominantly among Palestinian women and children, and has left 106,257 people injured.
Slovenia’s UN Ambassador Samuel Zbogar painted a grim picture of the situation, stating, “Gaza doesn’t exist any more. It is destroyed. Civilians are facing hunger, despair, and death.” He urged an immediate cessation of hostilities, adding, “There is no reason for this war to continue. We need a ceasefire now. We need to bring hostages home now.”
Algeria’s Deputy UN Ambassador Nacim Gaouaoui highlighted the global community’s inability to prevent the ongoing tragedy. “The price of silence and failure in the face of the Palestinian tragedy is a very heavy price, and it will be heavier tomorrow,” he warned, reflecting the deep frustration shared by many member states.
The resolutions reflect mounting international concern over the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza and a collective call for an end to violence. While these measures are non-binding, they underscore the urgency of a unified global response to the crisis.
