Violent riots across the UK escalated significantly on Sunday as far-right extremists targeted shops and public spaces, causing widespread damage and destruction. The unrest, described as the worst in over a decade, is rooted in anti-immigration sentiments and misinformation following a tragic mass stabbing incident in Southport, which claimed the lives of three young girls earlier this week.
Shops across the country were subjected to severe vandalism, including arson and looting. Reports indicate that several businesses were ransacked or set on fire, with shattered windows and broken doors being a common sight. In Hull, social media footage captured rioters looting a Lush cosmetics store after breaking open its doors and smashing its windows. Other affected establishments in Hull included a Shoe Zone store and a Specsavers, with additional videos showing shops in the city center being looted and set ablaze.
In Belfast, a cafe was similarly targeted and set on fire amid the anti-immigration protests. The destruction prompted the deployment of street cleaning teams to restore order in Hull once police had given the all-clear.
The violence also extended to Rotherham, where a large group of far-right protesters, many draped in British flags and chanting nationalist slogans, gathered in front of the Holiday Inn Express. This hotel houses a significant number of asylum seekers. The protesters began by throwing projectiles at police, smashing windows, and eventually entered the building, setting it ablaze.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the violence and issued a stern warning to the perpetrators. In a statement, Starmer emphasized that “far-right thugs” would face the “full force of the law” for their actions. He reassured those feeling targeted due to their race or religion, asserting that the violent mob does not represent the UK and vowed to bring those responsible to justice.
The government’s response to the escalating violence underscores its commitment to addressing hate-driven actions and maintaining public safety amidst the ongoing unrest.
