Parents at Brakenhale School in Berkshire are raising concerns about what they perceive as overly strict measures implemented by the new headteacher, Camilla Douglas, who took over in February. Some parents have likened the atmosphere to that of a “military camp”.
The complaints center around stringent rules, including bans on speaking in corridors and directives requiring students to make eye contact with teachers within just three seconds. Allegations of 30 student suspensions within the first week under the new head’s leadership have heightened concerns, with reports of students facing disciplinary action for minor infractions like a “fake cough” or cosmetic choices like short hair or false eyelashes.
Furthermore, it’s reported that 40 students have transferred to a neighboring secondary school within a single week, citing dissatisfaction with the situation at Brakenhale. Daily complaints about the new rules and the headteacher’s leadership inundate the school.
Parents like Keith and Kelly Ellis, who have two children at Brakenhale, express frustration over their children being “silenced” throughout the day, with instances of severe disciplinary action for minor incidents. Another parent, Nicole Alder, highlights the restriction on hallway conversations and instances of students facing disciplinary measures for cosmetic choices, echoing concerns likening the school environment to that of a military setting.
As dissatisfaction grows among parents, many have turned to platforms like Facebook to voice their complaints and seek resolution to the situation at Brakenhale School.
