UEFA has launched a disciplinary investigation into Spanish footballers Álvaro Morata and Rodrigo Hernández following their controversial behavior during celebrations for Spain’s Euro 2024 victory. The investigation could result in a ban of up to two matches for both players, who have been accused of making provocative chants about Gibraltar during their title celebrations.
Spain’s national team clinched their fourth European Championship on July 14 with a 2-1 victory over England in the Euro 2024 final. The team returned to Madrid to celebrate with their fans, where Morata and Rodri were seen singing chants asserting that Gibraltar should be part of Spain and not the UK. These actions have drawn criticism from various quarters, leading to UEFA’s disciplinary action.
The Gibraltar Football Association (Gibraltar FA) condemned the chants as “extremely provocative and insulting.” In a statement, the Gibraltar FA expressed dismay over the Spanish players’ behavior, describing it as unacceptable and urging UEFA to take appropriate action. “Football has no place for behavior of this nature,” the FA’s statement emphasized.
UEFA has appointed an Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector to assess whether Morata and Rodri violated the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations. The governing body’s statement indicated that further details regarding the investigation would be disclosed in due course.
If found guilty, Morata and Rodri could face a minimum suspension of two matches. The outcome of the investigation could significantly impact their upcoming schedules. Rodri is set to join his Manchester City squad for pre-season activities, while Morata is preparing to start a new chapter with AC Milan after leaving Atlético Madrid.
This development adds a layer of controversy to Spain’s triumph, highlighting the intersection of football, politics, and national identity in international sports.
