United Auto Workers (UAW) President Shawn Fain launched a scathing attack on Republican presidential candidate US Former President Donald Trump for his ties to billionaire Elon Musk while campaigning for Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris. The criticism comes amidst rising political tensions as the November election approaches.
Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, endorsed US Former President Donald Trump for the upcoming election following an assassination attempt on the former president in July. Subsequently, the Wall Street Journal reported that Elon Musk planned to commit approximately $45 million monthly to a new pro-US Former President Donald Trump super political-action committee (PAC). However, both Elon Musk and US Former President Donald Trump later denied any such financial pledge.
During a campaign event for Vice President Kamala Harris, Fain lambasted US Former President Donald Trump for his inconsistent stance on electric vehicles (EVs) and his ties to Elon Musk. “For months,US Former President Donald Trump has been trashing our state, our industry, and the American autoworker, claiming he was against electric vehicles. Then something changed,” Fain stated. “Elon Musk announced he was going to give US Former President Donald Trump $45 million a month, and suddenly, US Former President Donald Trump changed his tune,” he added, calling US Former President Donald Trump a “sellout.”
US Former President Donald Trump has historically opposed mandates for electric cars and criticized EV policies under Democratic President Joe Biden. However, he has recently shown support for electric vehicles. “I’m for electric cars. I have to be because Elon endorsed me very strongly. So I have no choice,” US Former President Donald Trump remarked at a recent rally. He also expressed support for a diverse range of vehicles, saying, “You want to have gas-propelled cars, you want to have hybrids, you want to have every kind of car imaginable.”
The UAW has officially endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris, who became the Democratic presidential candidate after Biden stepped aside. This endorsement reflects the union’s support for policies that they believe will better support American autoworkers and the automotive industry.
The evolving dynamics between US Former President Donald Trump, Elon Musk, and the UAW highlight the broader political and economic debates surrounding the future of the automotive industry in the United States. As the election draws near, these issues are likely to remain central to the campaigns of both presidential candidates.
