Former U.S. President Donald Trump and the Republican National Committee (RNC) reported raising $141 million in May, a significant increase attributed to his recent conviction in a hush money trial.
In a press release on Monday, Donald Trump’s campaign disclosed that $53 million—more than one-third of the total amount—was contributed within 24 hours following a New York jury’s guilty verdict on all 34 counts of falsifying business records. This verdict makes Donald Trump the first current or former U.S. president to be convicted of a crime.
The fundraising total, which the Trump campaign announced ahead of campaign finance rule requirements and has yet to be confirmed by official filings, nearly doubles the $76 million raised in April.
The Trump campaign, anticipating the Republican nomination, highlighted that the substantial sum was driven by over 2 million donations averaging $70.27 each, with a quarter of donors contributing to Trump’s campaign against President Joe Biden for the first time.
The campaign attributed the fundraising success to widespread support for Donald Trump following a verdict that had “outraged and motivated Americans from every walk of life.”
“Unfortunately for Democrats, their rigged political operation has backfired in a historic way, and Republicans are in a stronger position than ever to fire Crooked Joe Biden and Make America Great Again by electing President Trump on November 5,” said RNC Chairman Michael Whatley and Co-Chairman Lara Trump in a statement.
Donald Trump and his team have consistently framed the New York prosecution as a politically motivated witch hunt orchestrated by President Joe Biden, despite no evidence of the president’s involvement in the state-level case.
This impressive fundraising haul marks a continued improvement in Donald Trump’s campaign finances, following a successful April in which his campaign out-raised Biden’s for the first time.
The President Joe Biden campaign and the Democratic National Committee (DNC), which have yet to announce their May contributions, reported about $51 million in contributions for April. According to Federal Election Commission data, President Biden’s campaign raised over $180 million in the 15 months leading up to April 30, 2024, compared to approximately $120 million for the Trump campaign during the same period.
