In a series of high-profile arrests targeting corruption within the country’s military, Lieutenant-General Vadim Shamarin, the deputy head of the army’s general staff, has been detained on suspicion of accepting large-scale bribes, as reported by Al Jazeera.
According to TASS news agency, a military court has ordered Vadim Shamarin’s detention for two months. The charges against him allege violations of Part 6 of Article 290 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, specifically pertaining to accepting bribes on an especially large scale.
Vadim Shamarin’s arrest follows similar actions against other senior defense officials, part of a broader effort to address corruption within the military and its procurement processes. Notably, Major-General Ivan Popov and Lieutenant-General Yuri Kuznetsov were arrested earlier this month on bribery charges, alongside Russian Deputy Defence Minister Timur Ivanov in April.
While Vadim Shamarin’s superior, General Valery Gerasimov, has not been implicated in any wrongdoing, questions have arisen about the military’s performance in Ukraine during the ongoing conflict. However, the Kremlin has denied claims of conducting a targeted purge, stating that the fight against corruption is a continuous endeavor, according to Al Jazeera.
The latest developments underscore Russia’s efforts to address corruption within its military ranks and procurement systems.
