In a tragic development, three sons of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh were killed in an Israeli airstrike in the Gaza Strip on Wednesday, confirmed both the Palestinian Islamist group and Haniyeh’s family.
The Israeli military acknowledged carrying out the attack, identifying the three sons as operatives within the Hamas armed wing.
The victims – Hazem, Amir, and Mohammad – along with four of Haniyeh’s grandchildren, were in a car targeted by the airstrike in Gaza’s Al-Shati camp, according to Hamas sources.
Haniyeh, who resides abroad in Qatar, has been a prominent figure in Hamas’ diplomatic efforts amid ongoing conflict with Israel. He expressed his resolve, stating, “The blood of my sons is not dearer than the blood of our people.”
The tragedy occurred during the first day of the Muslim Eid al-Fitr holiday, as the family gathered for visits in their home refugee camp in Gaza City.
Hamas, while considering an Israeli ceasefire proposal, maintains its stance on key demands, including an end to Israeli military operations and the return of displaced Palestinians.
Haniyeh’s eldest son confirmed the deaths in a Facebook post, expressing gratitude for the martyrdom of his brothers.
Ismail Haniyeh has faced travel restrictions imposed by Israel, moving between Turkey and Qatar to fulfill diplomatic roles for Hamas.
Israel regards the entire Hamas leadership as terrorists, holding them responsible for ongoing violence in the region.
The circumstances surrounding a previous cross-border attack on Israel by Gaza-based militants, including Haniyeh’s knowledge beforehand, remain unclear.
