Alexander Zverev showcased his readiness for the upcoming French Open by clinching his sixth Masters title, defeating first-time finalist Nicolas Jarry 6-4, 7-5 in the Italian Open final on Sunday.
This victory marks Alexander Zverev’s second title in Rome, the first coming in 2017 when he was just 20 years old. It also represents his first trophy win since suffering a significant ankle injury in the French Open semi-finals in 2022.
“Winning my first ever Masters title here in Rome and now my first after my injury, also in Rome, makes this place very special for me. It has been a very, very special week,” remarked Alexander Zverev, the tournament’s third seed.
Nicolas Jarry, the 21st seed from Chile, had a remarkable run to the final, overcoming notable players such as Stefanos Tsitsipas and Tommy Paul. Despite his strong performance throughout the tournament, Nicolas Jarry struggled to break Alexander Zverev’s serve, as the German won 95% of his first-serve points.
Nicolas Jarry’s powerful serve, a key weapon in his arsenal, was effectively neutralized by Alexander Zverev, who absorbed the pressure and maintained a high level of consistency, committing few unforced errors.
Although Nicolas Jarry saved three match points, Alexander Zverev eventually secured the victory, having dropped only one set throughout the tournament.
“He is playing huge, and you can see by the players he has beaten here this week, he is playing incredible tennis,” Alexander Zverev said of Nicolas Jarry. “I told him if he continues to play like that he will have many chances at this level. Today, I am extremely happy to be the winner.”
Alexander Zverev’s triumph in Rome not only adds another prestigious title to his collection but also signals his return to top form as he heads into the French Open.
