  • Actor says jan nayakan will be his final movie

Tamil superstar Thalapathy Vijay has officially announced his retirement from acting, declaring that his upcoming film jan nayakan will be the final chapter of a cinematic journey that has spanned more than three decades, as he prepares to dedicate the rest of his public life entirely to politics and public service.

The announcement was made on december 27, 2025, during the audio launch of jan nayakan, directed by H. Vinoth, at a grand event held in malaysia. Standing before thousands of fans, vijay spoke with emotion and clarity, making it clear that his decision was final and deeply personal. At 51, the actor said he had reached a point where he wanted to give back to the people who had supported him unwaveringly since childhood, not through films, but through political action and leadership.

Vijay’s declaration marked the end of a 33-year-long film career that began when he was just ten years old. He entered the tamil film industry as a child artist with vetri and went on to debut as a lead actor at the age of eighteen with naalaiya theerpu in 1992. Over the years, he evolved from a young romantic hero into one of tamil cinema’s most bankable stars, commanding enormous fan loyalty and cultural influence across generations.

A journey from child artist to mass icon and box office force

Vijay reflected on his long journey in cinema, recalling how he faced criticism, doubts, and resistance from the very beginning of his career. He acknowledged that success did not come instantly and that he had to endure harsh scrutiny as he grew both as an actor and as a public figure. Yet, through every phase of his career, he said his fans remained his strongest pillar of support.

From early romantic dramas to action-packed mass entertainers, vijay steadily built a filmography that resonated with audiences across tamil nadu and beyond. His transformation into “thalapathy,” a title bestowed upon him by fans, symbolised not just stardom but emotional ownership. His films often blended commercial appeal with social themes, gradually shaping his image as an actor who stood for justice, resilience, and the common man.

In his speech, vijay emphasised that it was this bond with fans that ultimately influenced his decision to step away from cinema. He said people stood in long queues, waited for hours, and celebrated his films as festivals, and that kind of devotion deserved something more lasting than entertainment. According to him, cinema gave him fame, respect, and a platform, but politics would allow him to stand beside the people in a more direct and meaningful way.

He also addressed speculation around his recent box office record. Vijay noted that since puli in 2015, he has not delivered a single box office failure. While films such as beast (2022), varisu (2023), and the greatest of all time (2024) received mixed critical reviews, they performed strongly at the box office, reaffirming his commercial dominance even in the later phase of his career. He made it clear that his retirement was not driven by declining popularity or relevance, but by a conscious choice to shift focus while still at the peak of his influence.

The actor also paid tribute to his colleagues, directors, technicians, and producers who shaped his cinematic journey. He acknowledged that cinema had given him an identity and a voice, but said the time had come to use that voice for a larger purpose.

politics takes centre stage with tamilaga vettri kazhagam

Vijay confirmed that after completing jan nayakan, he will devote himself fully to politics, leaving no room for future film projects. He reminded the audience that he had already laid the groundwork for this transition by founding his political party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, on february 2, 2024. Since then, the party has been quietly organising, building grassroots networks, and preparing for its first major electoral test.

He announced that tamilaga vettri kazhagam will contest the tamil nadu assembly elections scheduled for 2026, marking his formal entry into electoral politics. Vijay said his goal was not short-term power but long-term service, stating that he wished to stand with the people for the next 30 to 33 years, just as they had stood by him throughout his film career.

Addressing his fans directly, vijay delivered one of the most emotional lines of the evening, saying that he was quitting cinema for the very people who had given him everything. He explained that while audiences came to theatres for him, now he wanted to stand for them in real life, fighting for their rights, dignity, and future. He framed his political ambition not as a personal aspiration, but as a responsibility shaped by decades of public love.

Vijay also acknowledged that entering politics would invite even harsher criticism than cinema ever did. However, he said he was prepared for it, having already faced judgment, mockery, and resistance throughout his acting career. He expressed confidence that his fans would continue to support him, not as a star, but as a leader seeking to bring change.

The announcement has already sparked widespread debate across tamil nadu’s political and cultural landscape. Supporters see vijay as a potential disruptor capable of challenging established political forces, while critics question his readiness for governance. Nevertheless, his decision has undeniably altered the state’s political narrative ahead of the 2026 elections.

With jan nayakan now positioned as his cinematic farewell, the film has taken on symbolic significance beyond entertainment. For fans, it represents the closing chapter of an era. For vijay, it marks a decisive turning point from the silver screen to the political stage, where he intends to channel the loyalty of his fan base into a movement aimed at long-term public service.
