A family in the United States had a harrowing experience when a large chunk of ice, believed to have fallen from a passing airplane, crashed through the roof of their home in New Jersey on Wednesday. The incident, reported by the New York Post, unfolded as the Gomez family was seated at their backyard table.
“We just hear a hollow sound coming down, and honestly, we didn’t think anything of it, and then you just hear a big DOOOOSH!” Sabrina Gomez recounted, describing the startling moment when the ice smashed through their home.
The impact left a significant hole several feet wide in the attic roof, causing noticeable damage to the property. “It was big stones… I guess it was a big square. When it came down, it smashed everything,” Paul Gomez remarked.
The Gomez residence is situated directly under several flight paths, a factor that the family believes contributed to the ice falling from an overhead aircraft. “When we look up, it’s basically like a plane flying by,” Sabrina Gomez explained.
Following the terrifying incident, the family quickly moved to the front of their house and filmed ice pieces scattered across the driveway. Despite the scare, they expressed relief that no one was injured. “Honestly, it was a little terrifying, but thank God it didn’t hit anybody, and it hit the roof, thank God,” Sabrina Gomez shared.
The family has taken action by filing a claim with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to investigate the incident further, seeking clarification on the origins of the ice.
This incident echoes a similar chilling event in Utah weeks earlier, where a chunk of ice from an airplane fatally struck a family’s pet goat. Cassidy Lewis, who witnessed the incident, described a loud bang that shook her home, prompting her to find an injured goat amidst ice fragments.
The FAA is expected to conduct a thorough investigation into the New Jersey incident to determine the cause and ensure such occurrences are prevented in the future.
