The Gautam Buddh Nagar Transport Department has launched a major enforcement campaign against overloaded vehicles, resulting in strict action against 206 trucks and heavy transport vehicles during the month of May. Authorities imposed a total compounding penalty of Rs 1.29 crore on violators, out of which Rs 50.80 lakh has already been recovered.

The department stated that the crackdown was initiated to improve road safety and control the increasing number of accidents caused by overloaded vehicles. During the operation, several vehicles were detained and parked at different police station areas including Sector 142, Jewar, Knowledge Park, Badalpur, and Sector 62 D Park.

Intensive Enforcement Drive Across Key Areas

Officials said the campaign was jointly conducted by assistant regional transport officers and passenger tax officials. Vehicles carrying loads beyond their permitted capacity were identified during intensive inspections conducted across major transport routes in the district.

Transport authorities clarified that the campaign would continue in the coming weeks as part of a broader strategy to enforce traffic discipline and reduce risks associated with overloaded commercial vehicles. According to officials, rising traffic pressure and repeated complaints regarding overloaded trucks made strict enforcement necessary.

The department also warned transport operators and vehicle owners that repeated violations could invite stronger legal action in the future.

Overloading Poses Serious Accident Risks

Transport officials highlighted that overloaded trucks significantly increase the chances of road accidents. Excessive weight affects vehicle balance and makes heavy vehicles difficult to control, especially at high speeds on highways and expressways.

Experts explained that overloaded vehicles are more likely to experience brake failures, tyre bursts, and overturning incidents. Such accidents not only endanger truck drivers but also put other motorists and pedestrians at risk.

Authorities stated that some transport operators overload vehicles to maximize profits and reduce transportation trips, but this practice severely compromises public safety and increases the likelihood of fatal accidents.

Damage to Roads and Vehicles

According to the department, overloading also causes severe mechanical stress on vehicles. Engines, tyres, suspension systems, and braking mechanisms wear out much faster under excessive load conditions, leading to higher maintenance and repair expenses for vehicle owners.

Road infrastructure also suffers significant damage due to overloaded transport vehicles. Excessive weight creates cracks, potholes, and surface deterioration on roads, forcing the government to spend large amounts on repair and maintenance work.

Infrastructure experts believe strict monitoring of overloaded vehicles is essential for maintaining road quality and extending the lifespan of highways and urban roads.

Increased Fuel Consumption and Pollution

Officials pointed out that overloaded vehicles consume significantly more fuel because of the added engine pressure caused by excess weight. Higher diesel consumption increases transportation costs and contributes to rising air pollution levels.

Environmental experts warned that heavy commercial vehicles are among the major contributors to urban air pollution and carbon emissions. In addition, overloaded trucks often move at slower speeds and experience frequent mechanical breakdowns, leading to delays in goods transportation and disruptions in commercial activities.

The Transport Department appealed to truck operators, vehicle owners, and transport companies to strictly follow loading capacity regulations. Officials emphasized that avoiding overloading is essential for ensuring safer roads, reducing pollution, improving vehicle lifespan, and maintaining smooth transportation systems across the district.
