Tejas Shirse set a new national record in the men’s 110m hurdles at a World Athletics Continental Tour (Challenger level) meeting in Jyvaskyla, Finland on Wednesday (May 22). The 21-year-old clocked 13.41 seconds in the final, breaking the previous national record of 13.48 seconds set by Siddhanth Thingalaya in 2017. Shirse’s record is pending the usual ratification process. However, the entry standard for the men’s 110m hurdles at the Paris Olympics is 13.27 seconds.
In the women’s 100m hurdles, Jyothi Yarraji matched her own national record of 12.78 seconds and secured first place, narrowly missing the automatic qualification for the Paris Olympics by one hundredth of a second.
At the same event, Animesh Kujur set a new personal best in the 100m, finishing second with a time of 10.39 seconds. Amlan Borgohain finished fourth, clocking his season’s best of 10.54 seconds. The entry standard for the men’s 100m at the Paris Olympics is 10 seconds.
In other events, Mohammed Afsal won the men’s 800m with a time of 1:48.91, although it was well below his personal best of 1:46.17. Eighteen-year-old long jumper Pavana Nagaraj finished fifth with a best effort of 6.06 meters.
At the Trond Mohn Games, a World Athletics Continental Tour (Silver level) event in Bergen, Norway, long jumper Shaili Singh finished second among seven athletes with a best effort of 6.12 meters.
