The Indian cricket team landed in New Delhi on Thursday morning, arriving in a special Air India chartered plane from Barbados. After a three-day wait on the Caribbean island following their T20 World Cup triumph, the cricket heroes returned home with the coveted trophy. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) shared a video of the jubilant players disembarking from the chartered plane, proudly carrying the trophy.
A large group of enthusiastic fans greeted the team at the airport, creating a festive atmosphere. Captain Rohit Sharma emerged from the airport holding the trophy, while star player Virat Kohli received a rousing reception, acknowledging the supporters with waves and smiles. The Men in Blue had been stranded in Barbados for four days after their victory, as Hurricane Beryl had forced the shutdown of the local airport. Once the weather conditions improved, a special Air India chartered flight was arranged to bring the World Champions back home.
The team endured a long journey of approximately 18 hours before finally touching down in India. Dedicated fans had been waiting in long queues since late the previous night to catch a glimpse of their favorite players. Special arrangements were made to welcome the team at both the airport and their hotel. A specially made cake representing the World Cup Trophy awaited the team’s arrival at the hotel, and welcome drinks featuring the national tricolour were prepared for the entire squad.
The team’s schedule included a special meet-up with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at 9:30 AM, followed by a chartered flight to Mumbai. In Mumbai, a grand road show was planned for the fans, starting from Nariman Point and culminating at the Wankhede Stadium. Here, the entire team would be honored in a special ceremony. The celebration would include a one-kilometer long bus parade to the stadium, where a small presentation would take place, and Rohit Sharma would hand over the World Cup to BCCI Secretary Jay Shah. The team would then disperse from Wankhede in the evening.
India’s T20 World Cup victory came after they defeated South Africa in the final held at the Kensington Oval in Barbados. India posted a competitive total of 176, with Virat Kohli top-scoring with 76 runs. The bowlers then took charge, with Jasprit Bumrah delivering a crucial spell in the final overs to secure the victory. South Africa, needing just 30 runs off the last 30 balls, were stymied by Bumrah’s brilliant bowling, ensuring India’s triumph.
This victory marked the end of an 11-year-long wait for an ICC trophy in men’s cricket for India. Rohit Sharma became only the second captain after MS Dhoni to lead India to a T20 World Cup victory. Following the win, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja announced their retirement from T20 Internationals, and it also signaled the end of coach Rahul Dravid’s tenure.
The team’s return and the subsequent celebrations underscore the immense support and pride of the Indian fans. As the cricketing heroes meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and participate in the grand roadshow, the nation celebrates not just their victory, but the end of a significant chapter in Indian cricket.
