Veteran astronaut Sunita Williams has safely returned to Earth after a nine-month stay in space, marking the end of an extraordinary journey. Sunita Williams, aboard the SpaceX Dragon Freedom spacecraft, splashed down off the coast of Florida on Wednesday at 3:27 am IST, alongside her NASA colleague Butch Wilmore. The safe return was met with relief and cheers from the teams monitoring the rescue operation, which was prompted by technical difficulties with Boeing’s Starliner capsule.

The Crew-9 mission, which was supposed to last only eight days, took an unexpected turn due to propulsion issues with the Starliner. As a result, Sunita Williams and Wilmore were stranded in space for an additional nine months. The capsule, unable to safely return with crew members onboard, was returned to Earth unoccupied in September, while the astronauts continued their stay aboard the International Space Station (ISS).

As the Dragon capsule touched down in the water, it was lifted onto a recovery vessel, and the side hatch was opened for the first time since last September. Crew-9 commander Nick Hague was the first to exit the capsule, assisted by the ground crew, followed by Russian cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov. Sunita Williams was next, emerging from the spacecraft with a wave and a smile, feeling Earth’s gravity for the first time after months of microgravity in space. Wilmore was the last to exit.

Upon landing, both Sunita Williams and Wilmore began a 45-day rehabilitation program to help them adjust to Earth’s gravity. This physical reconditioning is essential to counteract the effects of prolonged weightlessness, which include muscle atrophy, fluid shifts, reduced bone density, and changes in coordination and endurance. The rehabilitation process, conducted in three phases, involves daily two-hour sessions aimed at restoring physical health. The first phase focuses on mobility and muscle strength, the second includes cardiovascular training, and the third emphasizes functional development.

During the astronauts’ journey back to Earth, they were greeted by a surprising sight: a group of dolphins appeared as the spacecraft splashed down. SpaceX, led by Elon Musk, was responsible for ensuring the safe return of Crew-9 to Earth.

The White House also welcomed the astronauts back, with President Trump honoring his promise to rescue them after they had been stranded for months. This successful mission highlighted the resilience of astronauts and the importance of continued space exploration, even in the face of unexpected challenges.
