Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar defended Rohit Sharma against critics who highlighted his supposed weakness against left-arm pacers, following Rohit Sharma’s stellar performance in India’s T20 World Cup Super 8 victory over Australia on Monday, June 24.
Sunil Gavaskar took aim at broadcasters for showcasing stats emphasizing Rohit Sharma’s struggles against left-arm seamers, particularly after Rohit’s explosive display against Mitchell Starc. During the match, Rohit smashed four sixes off Starc and amassed 29 runs in a single over.
Mocking the stats, Sunil Gavaskar questioned, “Just thinking about Rohit Sharma once again, he got out to a left-hander. So before the next match, are we going to do another segment about his weakness to left-handers? He got to a left hander no? So another segment next time,” he quipped on Star Sports.
In response, Australia captain Aaron Finch defended Rohit Sharma , acknowledging the challenge left-arm bowlers pose but emphasizing Rohit Sharma’s improvement in handling them over the years.
Sunil Gavaskar reiterated his stance, dismissing the significance of such stats, especially when players like Rohit Sharma attempt aggressive shots against swinging deliveries early in the innings.
Rohit Sharma’s record-breaking 92-run knock off 41 balls propelled India to a total of 205 runs in the Super 8 encounter, securing their spot in the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup 2024 undefeated.
