Amar Kaushik’s highly anticipated sequel, Stree 2, has made a spectacular debut at the box office, setting a new record for 2024 with an impressive opening day collection of Rs 54.35 crore in India. Released on August 15, Independence Day, the film has emerged as the year’s biggest opener, surpassing all previous expectations.
The film, which features a star-studded cast including Shraddha Kapoor, Rajkummar Rao, Aparshakti Khurana, Abhishek Banerjee, and Pankaj Tripathi, continues the story from its successful 2018 predecessor. Early estimates indicate that Stree 2 earned Rs 8 crore from special opening premieres on August 14, followed by a staggering Rs 46 crore on its official release day.
This combined total of Rs 54.35 crore has set a new benchmark, surpassing the previous high earners of the year, including Kalki 2898 AD and Fighter. While Kalki earned Rs 95 crore nett across all languages in India and Fighter brought in Rs 24.60 crore, Stree 2 has quickly outpaced these figures.
Despite facing stiff competition from other major releases such as Akshay Kumar’s Khel Khel Mein and John Abraham’s Vedaa, Stree 2 has performed exceptionally well, driven by strong anticipation and positive word of mouth. Directed by Amar Kaushik, the film reunites Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor in their original roles. The storyline continues the tale of Chanderi, which is once again threatened by the fearsome Sarkata, prompting the townspeople to seek out Stree’s help.
“Stree 2 is funny, features some good scares, and represents a significant step forward for the franchise. While Hollywood has its Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), India’s own Stree Cinematic Universe (SCU) shows great potential.”
Released in theatres on August 15, Stree 2 is already making waves and is expected to continue its strong performance in the coming weeks.
