  • Steve Smith returns to No. 4 for India series.
  • Australia's opening position remains uncertain after Warner's retirement.

Australia’s batting lineup for the upcoming Test series against India has been clarified, with chief selector George Bailey confirming that Steve Smith will not open the innings. Instead, Steve Smith will return to his preferred No. 4 position, where he has historically excelled. The announcement was made on Monday, October 14, almost a month before the first match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Steve Smith had briefly taken on the role of opener following David Warner’s retirement. However, after discussions with captain Pat Cummins and coach Andrew McDonald, Steve Smith has opted to move back to his usual spot in the middle order. George Bailey confirmed that the decision was mutual and aimed at maximizing Steve Smith’s impact in a position where he has consistently delivered. Across 111 innings at No. 4, Steve Smith boasts an impressive average of 61.51, solidifying his status as one of Australia’s most reliable and prolific batters.

The decision to move Steve Smith back to No. 4 has opened up further questions about Australia’s opening combination ahead of the crucial series against India. With Steve Smith no longer filling the opening role, Australia is left searching for a stable replacement, particularly in light of recent changes within the squad. The retirement of Warner and the injury to all-rounder Cameron Green have added complexity to the situation. Green, who underwent back surgery, has been ruled out for six months, leaving a significant gap in both Australia’s batting and bowling depth.

George Bailey acknowledged the challenge posed by the team’s current predicament, stating that the selectors would be closely evaluating options to fill the opening slot. The absence of both Warner and Green places additional pressure on Australia’s top order as they prepare to face a strong Indian side in challenging subcontinental conditions.

Steve Smith’s return to No. 4 signals a strategic decision by the Australian team management to maintain stability in the middle order. Steve Smith’s vast experience and track record make him a critical player in the upcoming series, which is expected to be fiercely contested.

Australia will now focus on finding the right combination to open the innings, with several players being considered for the role. The Border-Gavaskar Trophy will kick off in India next month, with both teams vying for supremacy in what is traditionally one of the most anticipated and closely fought Test series in world cricket.
