  • The Delhi Capitals pacer apologised to fans and management, reaffirming he is working towards a full recovery and return to the team.

New Delhi, March 29, 2026 | Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc has issued a strong response to critics questioning his commitment to the Indian Premier League (IPL), clarifying that his absence from the early part of the season is due to injury and ongoing rehabilitation.

The 36-year-old Delhi Capitals pacer took to social media to address what he described as “misinformed opinions” circulating in the Indian media regarding his fitness and availability.

Starc Clarifies Injury Status

In a detailed statement shared on his Instagram story, Starc revealed that he is currently recovering from shoulder and elbow injuries, the extent of which became clear only after the Australian summer.

“Despite the opinions and views of certain individuals… I’m currently rehabbing and managing an injury in my shoulder and elbow,” he said, adding that some commentators have made “strong statements” without full knowledge of his condition.

He further criticised those speculating about his fitness, stating that some individuals claim to understand his physical condition better than he does himself.

Apology to Team and Fans

Starc acknowledged that his absence at the start of the season may affect the team’s balance and results. He issued an apology to both the Delhi Capitals management and fans for missing the initial matches.

“I do acknowledge this injury setback, and timing is disruptive to the Delhi team, and I apologise for that and to the fans,” he said.

However, he reaffirmed his commitment to the franchise, stating that he remains in constant communication with the team and is working towards returning to action as soon as possible.

Background to the Controversy

The debate over Starc’s IPL participation gained momentum after his wife, Alyssa Healy, responded to a fan on social media, confirming that the pacer was injured and therefore unavailable to join the team earlier.

Despite this clarification, questions were raised by several cricket experts regarding his absence, especially given his recent workload.

Aakash Chopra Questions Decision

Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra was among those who questioned the reasoning behind Starc’s delayed availability. He expressed confusion over reports suggesting workload management, pointing out that the pacer had not played competitive cricket since the 2025–26 Ashes series.

Chopra also raised broader concerns about player availability in the IPL, noting that other international players have also missed matches due to rest or personal commitments. He suggested that such situations could send mixed signals regarding player participation in the league.

Recent Playing History

Starc recently featured in all five Tests of the Ashes series against England and also participated in the latter stages of the Big Bash League. Meanwhile, other Australian players such as Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood have already joined their respective IPL franchises.

His delayed arrival at Delhi Capitals had led to speculation about fitness, workload management, and national team priorities ahead of a busy international calendar.

Focus on Recovery and Return

With the IPL season underway, Starc’s immediate focus remains on recovering fully from his injuries. His statement indicates a clear intent to return to the field once medically fit, rather than rushing back prematurely.

The Delhi Capitals will be closely monitoring his progress, as his experience and pace bowling are expected to play a crucial role in the team’s campaign.

Starc’s response has brought clarity to the situation, highlighting the challenges players face in balancing international commitments, league participation, and fitness management.

As the tournament progresses, all eyes will be on his recovery timeline and eventual return, which could significantly strengthen Delhi Capitals’ bowling lineup in the latter stages of the season.
