New Zealand’s T20I captain Sophie Devine has announced that she will resign from her role following the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Sophie Devine, a 34-year-old all-rounder, has led the White Ferns in 56 T20 internationals, achieving 25 wins, 28 losses, and one tied game. Her leadership began in a few games during 2014-15 before she officially took over from Amy Satterthwaite in 2020.
Devine, who also competes for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the Women’s Premier League (WPL), stated that her decision to step down is aimed at reducing her workload and fostering the development of future leaders. In a statement, she expressed pride in her tenure as captain, acknowledging the challenges that come with the role. “Stepping away from the T20 captaincy will take a bit off my plate so I can focus more of my energy on my playing role and nurturing the future leaders,” she said.
Despite her resignation from the T20I captaincy, Sophie Devine will continue in her role as ODI captain. She remains committed to leading the team through the 50-over World Cup scheduled to take place in India next year. “I’m not ready to give up ODI captaincy just yet. But I won’t be around forever, so I think stepping away from captaining one format at a time gives the next leaders time to find their feet,” Sophie Devine added.
Recently, Sophie Devine participated in the Hundred Women’s competition for Birmingham Phoenix, where she played six matches, scored 117 runs with a top score of 37, and failed to take a wicket from 13 overs. She is currently undergoing rehabilitation for a foot injury.
New Zealand’s T20 World Cup campaign is set to commence on October 4 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
