The Union Minister said that social media platforms have been given seven days to align their terms of use as per IT rules. Minister of State for Electronics and IT Rajeev Chandrashekhar told reporters after the meeting with social media platforms that the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology will develop a platform on which users can report about violations of IT rules by social media platforms.
Minister of State for Electronics and IT Rajeev Chandrashekhar on Friday said the government will assist citizens in filing FIRs against social media platforms for violation of IT rules if they suffer from objectionable content like deepfakes.
He said, “The Rule 7 officer will also be the one who will create a platform where it will be very easy for citizens to bring to the notice of the Government of India their notices or allegations or reports of violations of law by the platforms and the Rule 7 officer will be responsible for that digital platform.” Will take information and will respond accordingly. So we will make it much easier for citizens to report violations of the law by platforms to the government.
“MeitY will help users to report and file FIRs about violations of IT rules very easily,” the minister said. Cabinet Minister Shri Rajeev Chandrasekhar clarified, “From today onwards there is zero tolerance for violation of IT rules.” He also said that under Rule 7, an officer will be nominated who will be tasked with creating a mechanism where users can lodge their complaints regarding deepfakes.
The minister also said that an FIR will be lodged against the intermediary and if they reveal the details from where the content originated then an FIR will be lodged against the entity that posted the content. Deepfakes are realistic but fabricated videos created by artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms trained on online footage.
