BJP leader Smriti Irani has addressed her recent defeat in the Amethi constituency, describing it as an “emotive and ideological issue” but maintaining a positive outlook on her contributions. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Smriti Irani faced a significant loss to Kishori Lal Sharma, a loyalist of the Gandhi family, after previously achieving a notable victory against Rahul Gandhi in 2019. Despite the setback, Smriti Irani expressed that her real victory lies in her accomplishments in the constituency.
In a podcast, Smriti Irani remarked that her defeat in Amethi did not dishearten her. She compared her situation to that of other prominent politicians, noting that even former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had faced electoral losses. She highlighted that Narendra Modi is the only major leader yet to experience defeat. Smriti Irani reflected on her past losses in the 2004 Chandni Chowk constituency and the 2014 elections, asserting that elections are transient while her achievements in Amethi are lasting.
Smriti Irani emphasized her achievements in Amethi, where she claims significant improvements in local infrastructure and living conditions. She stated that her efforts have led to the construction of homes for 100,000 families, the provision of electricity to 80,000 homes, and the distribution of gas cylinders to 200,000 families for the first time. Smriti Irani also highlighted her commitment to addressing local development issues, including road construction in previously neglected villages, the building of 350,000 toilets, and the connection of 400,000 people to the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme.
Smriti Irani’s comments also indirectly addressed criticism regarding her presence in Amethi during her tenure. She noted that despite allegations of neglect, she remained dedicated to improving the constituency’s conditions and even purchased a home there.
In response to speculation about her potential role as the BJP’s chief ministerial candidate for Delhi, Smriti Irani chose not to directly address the question. Instead, she reiterated her dedication to public service, citing her previous roles as an MP, minister, and party leader. Irani’s comments reflect her focus on her contributions and achievements rather than the recent electoral defeat.
