In a decisive operation highlighting the challenges of insurgency in India’s Northeast, security forces have shot dead an insurgent from a faction of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN) during an encounter in the dense forests of Arunachal Pradesh’s Longding district. Acting on specific intelligence inputs about armed insurgents near the Indo-Myanmar border, a joint team launched a search operation that led to a heavy exchange of fire, resulting in the death of one insurgent while others managed to flee into the forest cover.
Operation in a Sensitive Border Zone
The operation took place in an area under the Tissa police station, close to the sensitive Indo-Myanmar border, which has often served as a corridor for insurgent movements and camps due to its rugged terrain and dense forest cover. According to Dekio Gumja, Superintendent of Police, Longding district, the joint security forces recovered the body of the killed insurgent following the encounter. The presence of insurgents was detected when the forces, acting on actionable intelligence, launched a combing operation to intercept a group of around seven to eight heavily armed NSCN insurgents suspected to be hiding in the forest area.
As the forces advanced, the insurgents opened fire, prompting an effective retaliation. The ensuing gun battle led to the neutralisation of one insurgent while the remaining militants managed to escape, taking advantage of the difficult terrain and thick vegetation. A combing operation was immediately launched by the security personnel to track down and intercept the fleeing insurgents to prevent them from regrouping or crossing the porous international border.
Recovery of Explosives and Weapons
During the post-encounter search operation, security forces recovered a significant cache of arms and explosive materials from the site. The recoveries included 15 kilograms of improvised explosive devices (IEDs), 34 detonators, two .22 pistols along with two magazines, and various camp materials, which indicate the insurgents were possibly preparing for disruptive activities in the region. The recovery of such a large quantity of explosives near the Indo-Myanmar border underlines the persistent security challenges faced by the forces in preventing insurgent groups from planning and executing attacks within Indian territory.
The area where the encounter took place is known for being used by various insurgent factions as hideouts and for movement across the international border, making it a hotspot for counter-insurgency operations. The joint forces, comprising units of the Indian Army and local police, continue to maintain a high vigil in the region to prevent any attempts by insurgent groups to establish operational bases close to the border.
Local sources confirmed that the operation was part of a sustained effort to flush out insurgent elements operating in the region and to dismantle their logistical and operational infrastructure that often uses the cross-border routes for movement and arms supply. The successful interception and recovery of arms and explosives are seen as a crucial step in maintaining security in the border areas and preventing potential attacks on security forces and civilians in the region.
The security forces have intensified their operations in the sensitive districts of Arunachal Pradesh, including Longding, which shares its border with Myanmar, to curb the infiltration of insurgents who exploit the challenging geography for shelter and movement. The continued cooperation between the Indian Army and the state police forces has led to significant gains in the fight against insurgency in the Northeast, which has witnessed fluctuating levels of insurgent activities over the decades.
Officials believe that the proactive approach by the forces and intelligence-based operations are key to countering the insurgency threats in the region, particularly in areas that are strategically significant due to their proximity to the international border. The security forces are committed to ensuring peace in the region while preventing insurgent groups from creating disturbances or carrying out attacks against the state and its people.
The recovery of explosives and arms from the encounter site has also underscored the need for continued vigilance and the importance of actionable intelligence in counter-insurgency operations in the Northeast. The operations will continue in the area to ensure that any remaining insurgent elements are tracked down and neutralised to safeguard the security of the region and its people.
