Scott Styris has emphasized the importance of allowing Hardik Pandya to focus solely on his role as a full all-rounder rather than being burdened with leadership responsibilities at this time. As India prepares for the 1st T20I against Sri Lanka, Scott Styris believes that the team should prioritize getting Hardik Pandya back to peak performance as an all-rounder before considering him for leadership roles. Hardik Pandya, who previously served as vice-captain during India’s T20 World Cup victory and led the team in Rohit Sharma’s absence, was recently overlooked for the captaincy in favor of Suryakumar Yadav.
Chief selector Ajit Agarkar explained that Hardik Pandya’s removal from the leadership group was due to fitness concerns, with Shubman Gill being appointed as vice-captain. Speaking to India Today, Scott Styris suggested that Hardik Pandya should be allowed to lead by example through his performance rather than through official titles. He stressed that Hardik Pandya’s current focus should be on maintaining fitness and consistency to justify any future leadership roles.
Scott Styris acknowledged Pandya’s skills and leadership qualities but pointed out the difficulty of having a captain or vice-captain who is frequently sidelined due to injury. He believes that Pandya must first demonstrate his ability to perform consistently in all aspects of his game, including batting and bowling, before being considered for leadership again.
According to Scott Styris, the priority should be on getting Hardik Pandya to deliver as a complete all-rounder, capable of contributing significantly in both batting and bowling. Once he achieves that level of performance and consistency, then discussions about leadership roles can be revisited.
