Kolkata | February 9, 2026
Scotland dominated proceedings against debutants Italy in their Group C clash of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, riding on a blistering knock from George Munsey and a disciplined bowling effort to put Italy under severe pressure early in the chase.
Opting to bowl first after winning the toss, Italy were put on the back foot as Scotland posted a commanding 207 for 4 in 20 overs, their highest-ever total in T20 World Cup history and the first 200-plus score of the 2026 edition.
Munsey Leads Scotland’s Batting Charge
Opening batter George Munsey produced a commanding innings of 84 runs off 54 balls, laced with eight fours and powerful boundary hitting that neutralised Italy’s bowling attack. Munsey dominated the powerplay and maintained momentum through the middle overs before falling in the 14th over, caught at the boundary.
He was well supported by Brandon McMullen, who accelerated towards the end, while captain Richie Berrington also chipped in before being dismissed in the death overs. Scotland finished strongly, with Michael Leask smashing a six off the final ball to take the total past the 200 mark.
Italy’s bowling attack struggled for control, though Grant Stewart claimed Italy’s first-ever T20 World Cup wicket, while Ali Hasan and Thomas Draca picked up late breakthroughs to prevent an even bigger total.
Italy Handed Major Blow as Captain Madsen Injured
Italy’s challenge suffered a major setback even before the chase began, as captain Wayne Madsen was ruled out of the match after dislocating his shoulder while fielding. The injury left Italy one batter short for the remainder of the game, dealing a significant blow to their World Cup debut.
A decision on Madsen’s availability for the rest of the tournament is expected later.
Scotland Strike Early in the Chase
Chasing 208, Italy’s innings got off to a disastrous start. Justin Mosca was dismissed on the first ball, cutting hard only to be caught brilliantly by Munsey at backward point.
Despite a brief counter-attack by JJ Smuts, Italy continued to lose wickets at regular intervals. Brad Currie dismissed Smuts with a clever slower delivery, while Munsey once again showcased his fielding brilliance to send back Anthony Mosca, diving sharply to complete the catch.
At the end of five overs, Italy were reeling at 41 for 3, facing an uphill task against a confident Scottish bowling unit.
Key Match Context
Italy are making their maiden appearance in a T20 World Cup, having qualified through the European route, while Scotland entered the match seeking redemption after losing their opening game to West Indies. The Scots, drafted into the tournament at short notice following Bangladesh’s withdrawal, looked far more settled and clinical in all departments.
With Scotland firmly in control and Italy struggling without their captain, the contest appeared heavily tilted in favour of the European side as the chase progressed.
