Launched on October 3, 2021, by the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways, the “Scheme for Good Samaritan” continues to make strides in promoting immediate assistance to victims of fatal accidents involving motor vehicles. Under this initiative, individuals who rush victims to hospitals within the “Golden Hour” are eligible for a ₹5,000 award per incident. The scheme, aimed at motivating the public to save lives, has been widely publicized through various media channels.
Ongoing Support and Recognition
The scheme, scheduled to run until March 31, 2026, aims to eliminate barriers faced by Good Samaritans in emergency situations. It ensures that those who report accidents or transport victims receive recognition and support without additional requirements from authorities or hospitals. The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways has allocated initial grants and continues to reimburse states and union territories monthly for award disbursements.
Monitoring and Evaluation
At the district level, committees comprising officials from the district administration, health services, and transport departments review and approve nominations monthly. Additionally, a State Level Monitoring Committee oversees the implementation, recommending outstanding cases for national awards. Annually, the Ministry recognizes exceptional Good Samaritans with ₹1,00,000, along with certificates and trophies during the National Road Safety Month in Delhi.
Comprehensive Road Safety Measures
In conjunction with the Good Samaritan scheme, the Ministry emphasizes road safety across national highways through stringent engineering, enforcement, and emergency care measures. These efforts include mandatory road safety audits, black spot rectifications, and vehicle safety enhancements like airbag mandates and crash testing standards.
The initiative underscores the Ministry’s commitment to fostering a safer road environment while acknowledging the heroic efforts of individuals who intervene during critical moments. As it progresses towards its 2026 deadline, the scheme remains pivotal in cultivating a culture of citizen responsibility and prompt action in saving lives on India’s roads.
