Satish Kumar has been appointed as the new Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Railway Board, making history as the first individual from the Scheduled Caste or Dalit community to take on this role. Satish Kumar, an Indian Railway Management Service (IRMS) officer, will officially step into the position on September 1, following the retirement of Jaya Varma Sinha on August 31.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) confirmed Satish Kumar’s appointment in an official order issued by the Department of Personnel & Training (DoPT). The order stated, “The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the appointment of Shri Satish Kumar, Indian Railway Management Service (IRMS), Member (Traction & Rolling Stock), Railway Board to the post of Chairman & Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Railway Board.”
Satish Kumar, a distinguished officer from the 1986 batch of the Indian Railway Service of Mechanical Engineers (IRSME), has had a significant impact on Indian Railways over his 34-year career. He has been recognized for his contributions to the railway sector, including his recent role as the General Manager of North Central Railway, Prayagraj, which he assumed on November 8, 2022. Satish Kumar’s career trajectory highlights his dedication to public service and his role in advancing railway operations.
Satish Kumar’s educational credentials are equally impressive. He holds a Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) in Mechanical Engineering from the Malaviya National Institute of Technology (MNIT), Jaipur. Additionally, he has pursued further education through a Post Graduate Diploma in Operation Management and Cyber Law from Indira Gandhi National Open University. These qualifications underscore his expertise and readiness to lead the Railway Board.
Since beginning his career with Indian Railways in March 1988, Satish Kumar has held numerous key positions across various zones and divisions.
