Samajwadi Party MP from Sambhal, Zia Ur Rehman Barq, has been slapped with a massive fine of ₹1.91 crore by the Uttar Pradesh Electricity Department after being accused of electricity theft at his residence. The department’s investigation uncovered tampering with two electricity meters, leading to allegations of a deliberate effort to underreport electricity usage.
On Thursday, officials from the Uttar Pradesh Electricity Department visited Barq’s residence to check the meter readings and assess the electrical load. They found a significant discrepancy between the electricity connection and the appliances in use. While Barq had a 2 kW connection, the actual load at his residence was calculated to be 16.5 kW. Newly installed smart meters showed a power load of 5.5 kW. Despite claims by Barq’s family that a 10 kW solar panel and a 5 kW generator were installed to handle the load, officials noted that the solar panels were non-functional.
During the inspection, heavy electrical appliances were found at the residence, including three split air conditioners, two refrigerators, a coffee maker, a deep freezer, a geyser, a microwave oven, and over 50 LED bulbs. These appliances collectively accounted for a load of 16.48 kW. Notably, the electricity bill for Barq’s residence had been zero for the past six months, raising further suspicions.
Following these findings, an FIR was lodged against Barq under Section 135 of the Anti-Power Theft Act. In addition to the fine, the electricity connection to his residence was cut off. The MP, who also serves as the Chairman of the District Electricity Committee, is now facing serious allegations of misusing his position.
Compounding the controversy, Barq’s father, Mamluk Ur Rehman, allegedly threatened electricity department officials during the inspection. This led to an additional case being registered against him for obstructing government work.
The case highlights the ongoing challenges faced by authorities in curbing electricity theft in Uttar Pradesh. Barq’s position as a lawmaker and his involvement in this incident have intensified public scrutiny. The Uttar Pradesh Electricity Department has emphasized the importance of enforcing anti-theft laws to ensure accountability and prevent misuse of public resources.
As investigations continue, the incident underscores the need for stricter measures to address power theft and hold those in positions of power accountable for any wrongdoing. The case has sparked a political debate, with many demanding a transparent resolution to uphold public trust.
