Sam Konstas is set to make his Test debut for Australia in the highly anticipated Boxing Day Test against India at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). The 19-year-old will become the fourth-youngest Australian to debut in Test cricket, following Ian Craig, current skipper Pat Cummins, and Tom Garrett. Australia’s coach Andrew McDonald confirmed the development on Tuesday, expressing excitement over Konstas’ inclusion in the playing XI.
Konstas was informed of his debut by selector Tony Dodemaide earlier on Tuesday. McDonald highlighted the young batter’s skill and composure, stating, “Age is no barrier. What he has shown is an array of shots and the ability to put pressure back on opponents. We’re really excited for him.”
While Konstas’ debut brings excitement, Travis Head’s availability remains uncertain due to a minor quad strain he suffered during Australia’s second innings in Brisbane. Head did not field during India’s brief second innings, which was interrupted by rain. On Tuesday, Head engaged in a light net session and some fielding drills but still awaits clearance from the team’s medical staff.
McDonald remains optimistic about Head’s inclusion, citing the batter’s promising form in practice. “He looked good with the bat. He’s been running and should be fully functional by game time,” McDonald said. However, Head’s fitness test will likely determine his role, particularly in fielding positions requiring agility, such as bat-pad.
Australia will make at least two confirmed changes to their XI. Konstas replaces Nathan McSweeney, while Scott Boland comes in for injured pacer Josh Hazlewood. McDonald expressed confidence in Boland’s inclusion, hinting at his pivotal role at the MCG, a ground where Boland has historically performed well.
Meanwhile, Mitchell Marsh has been declared fully fit after overcoming back spasms that limited his contributions earlier in the season. McDonald clarified that Marsh’s limited bowling workload in the last Test was due to weather interruptions rather than fitness concerns. “He’s ready to go and will play a bigger role with the ball in this match,” McDonald confirmed.
Australia’s final XI will be officially announced by captain Pat Cummins on Christmas Day. With the series poised for an intense battle, these changes aim to strike a balance between experience and young talent as Australia looks to maintain their dominance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
