External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar, during his official visit to the United Kingdom, held discussions with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on strengthening economic cooperation and fostering deeper people-to-people ties between the two nations. The meeting, which took place at 10 Downing Street, also included an exchange of views on global developments, with a particular focus on the ongoing Ukraine conflict. S Jaishankar conveyed warm greetings from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and emphasized the importance of advancing the strategic partnership between India and the UK.
S Jaishankar also met UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy at Chevening House, where he expressed appreciation for the warm welcome. The discussions with Lammy covered various aspects of the bilateral relationship, including economic collaboration, security partnerships, and global diplomatic issues. The engagements highlighted the shared commitment of both nations to deepening ties across multiple sectors.
Furthering his diplomatic outreach, S Jaishankar held discussions with UK Home Secretary Yvette Cooper, focusing on talent mobility and joint efforts to combat issues such as human trafficking and extremism. Both leaders acknowledged the significance of enhancing cooperation in law enforcement and immigration policies to facilitate a seamless exchange of professionals and skilled workers. The meeting underscored the growing importance of addressing security challenges collectively while ensuring a smooth flow of talent between the two nations.
In a separate engagement, S Jaishankar met the UK’s Secretary of State for Business and Trade, Jonathan Reynolds, to review the progress of the ongoing free trade agreement (FTA) negotiations. Both sides reiterated their commitment to advancing trade discussions with the objective of finalizing a comprehensive and mutually beneficial agreement. Strengthening economic partnerships remains a top priority for India and the UK, given their expanding trade and investment relations.
S Jaishankar’s visit to the UK is part of a broader diplomatic tour that also includes Ireland. He is scheduled to meet his Irish counterpart, Simon Harris, along with other senior officials and members of the Indian community during his visit to Dublin on March 6 and 7. India and Ireland share strong diplomatic ties rooted in democratic values, cultural linkages, and expanding economic cooperation. The visit aims to inject fresh momentum into India’s bilateral engagement with both the UK and Ireland, reinforcing shared strategic interests and fostering closer collaboration in various fields. The trip is expected to enhance diplomatic ties and create new avenues for partnership in trade, security, and cultural exchanges.
