As the first batch of Agniveers nears the end of their four-year service term in 2026 under the Agnipath scheme, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) is taking steps to ensure they are absorbed into various government roles. The MHA has written to state governments and Union Territories, urging them to reserve vacancies for the trained personnel in police forces and other government departments. This effort aims to provide Agniveers with post-service career opportunities, a significant demand since the scheme’s inception.
Employment Push for Agniveers
Union Home Minister Amit Shah has personally reached out to chief ministers, while Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan has written to chief secretaries, urging them to focus on employment for approximately 75% of the Agniveers, who will be leaving the armed forces after completing their four-year stint. The letter highlights the rigorous military training that Agniveers undergo, making them well-suited for roles in law enforcement and other state-level uniformed services. The MHA’s proposal suggests that 25% of Agniveers will likely be absorbed back into the armed forces, while 10% will be given quotas in Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs). The states have been encouraged to offer an additional 15-20% of vacancies, leading to nearly 50% of Agniveers being employed in police forces.
Aiming for Nationwide Standardization
This initiative reflects the Centre’s commitment to creating a post-service pathway for Agniveers, a crucial aspect of the Agnipath scheme. The scheme offers short-term military service to youth between the ages of 17.5 and 21, promising skill development and post-service support. However, one of the primary concerns remains the reintegration of Agniveers into civilian life, with many questioning the availability of job opportunities once their service ends.
Several states have already taken steps to reserve job openings for Agniveers, but the MHA’s recent communication seeks to standardize these measures ahead of the 2026 timeline. The goal is to ensure a smooth transition for the Agniveers, providing them with stable career opportunities after their military service concludes. The MHA is hopeful that the states will act promptly to support the smooth reintegration of these skilled youth into civilian roles.
